Lime Green Nicotiana offers fountains of trumpet-shaped chartreuse flowers on softly draping stems that rise from a basal rosette of big spoon-shaped leaves. These tropical looking plants bloom hard in garden beds where their lovely color enhances other garden flowers. Like all tobacco relatives, deer resistant Lime Green can handle both heat and humidity. The glowing chartreuse blossoms really shine in the afternoon! Hummingbirds love these flowers and always seek them out.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

PERENNIAL
GROWN AS ANNUAL

Summer/fall bloom. Can handle light frost.

TO START OUTDOORS

Sow seed directly into a finely textured, well-worked garden bed in sun or in partial shade once danger of spring frost is past. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface and do not cover; they need light to germinate. Keep consistently moist as seedlings emerge. Weed and water young seedlings carefully and thin to stand 10 inches apart before they get too crowded.

TO START EARLY INDOORS

Start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last spring frost date. Sow seeds as thinly as possible in a container of seed starting mix, lightly press seeds into the soil surface and do not cover; they need light to germinate. Keep moist but not soggy, and provide a strong light source until seedlings are ready to plant outdoors after gradually acclimating to outdoor conditions.

THIN OR TRANSPLANT

Space seedlings 10 inches apart so they have room to grow.

GROWING NOTES

Nicotiana grows well in sun but can tolerate shade, especially during the afternoon. In mild areas, plants will winter over; cut back in fall for spring regrowth and early bloom. Plant them with other showy annuals like Cosmos, Cleome and Orlaya for an old-fashioned country garden.

Excellent germination, absolutely 0 deer nibbles, it does get long and spindley so make sure it has some support from nearby plants. Love the green flowers

Maybe not perfectly ideal for my zone 9b flower garden, but once it started getting warmer, they definitely shot up. After moving seedlings outside they stayed very short like little Lilly pads flat on the ground. The leaves kept getting wider, but no vertical until the real heat came. While the leaves were low, slugs and earwigs would feast on them so I had to cover them with clear plastic containers vented on top. (Upside down burpee pots or salsa containers I manually vented on “top”.) once the leaves got wide enough and thick enough they weren’t as tasty to all but the hungriest insects so the leaves could keep ahead of the insects.

The flowers are a hit. They are most attractive in the morning. They close up in the midday heat but there are always plenty in the mornings. Blooms are white to yellow. Surprise, today one of the branches is sport deep red/burgundy blooms.

Seeds came up beautifully and plants are thriving. Have the purple and lime on same pot. Will be stunning!
