(Portulaca grandiflora)
EXCLUSIVE - Our own special pastel mix blooms in chiffon pink, peach, sunny yellow and ivory. Perfect for hot, sunny locations, hanging pots, walkways or to cover bare spots in the landscape, portulaca is one of the most drought tolerant annuals. The prostrate, succulent plants cover themselves with satiny cup-shaped flowers that bloom abundantly like little open-centered roses. Our special Sundial portulaca provides larger, earlier, semi-double flowers and summer-long bloom.

TO START EARLY INDOORS

About 4 to 6 weeks before last expected frost, sow 1 inch apart in containers of moistened seed starting mix. Lay the pelleted seeds gently on the soil surface, then cover very lightly with a fine sprinkling of mix. Keep moist but not soggy and provide a strong light source while seedlings become well-established. When both day and night temperatures stay above 50° F, acclimate to outdoor conditions. Transplant 8 inches apart into well-drained soil in full sun.

TO PLANT OUTDOORS

Once all danger of frost is past and nights are regularly in the 50° range, sow in full sun, 1 inch apart, in well-raked ordinary soil with good drainage. Cover seed pellets very lightly. Sprinkle or mist seed bed gently while waiting germination. Portulaca will grow and flower readily with no added fertilizer. Space seedlings 8 inches apart as plants will spread and form a carpet of bloom.

GROWING TIPS

Note: These tiny seeds are encased in clay pellets for ease of handling. Portulaca thrives in conditions that make other flowers wilt. A good choice for sandy slopes, edging, borders, beds along sidewalks or driveways, containers or hanging baskets. Keep young seedlings moist – mature plants will form a ground cover and need water only in dry summer areas or in droughty conditions.
