Time to Plant a Second Season Garden
The planting months of late summer are perfect for sowing seeds
of short season varieties which tolerate cooler nights and shorter days and
provide tasty fall harvests. We call this "Second Season Gardening".
Read this month's feature article
Gardening for a Second Season for planting information and our list of
what to grow - and take advantage of our seed sale to extend your garden's
production this year. For fall planting suggestions, also refer to our
Kitchen
Garden Plans for both short
and long season areas. |

White Corn

"Little Lion" Zinnia |
In the Trial Garden:
Edibles and Eye
Candy
- by Lindsay Del Carlo, Trial Garden Manager
One of the best things about our trial garden is taste testing! We have grown out four varieties white corn, and recently had pleasure choosing one. Some
have a milder flavor, but the general consensus was “The sweeter the better!”, so
we chose the variety with the most plump, sweet kernels and have been enjoying corn
both cooked and fresh straight from garden.
We are always in search of fabulous flowers that are
easy to grow and look great in your garden. Rudbeckia ‘Capuccino’ is a
perennial that we’ve found worthy of attention. It is quick to grow from
seed and the richly colored flowers are quite an eye catcher in the
garden.
The zinnias are in full bloom and they are spectacular. A new favorite
of ours is a Dwarf Zinnia Mix of brilliant colors. This variety is early
to bloom with an abundance of flowers and looks exceptionally tidy in
the garden bed. Another little cutie is a Dwarf Zinnia with large double
orange flowers that we plan to name Zinnia ‘Little Lion’. It’s bright
showy petals are a delight and make interesting bouquets.
