In the Trial Garden
As of early August, the late planting of six different varieties of pole beans
we are evaluating is bearing heavily. So far, we really love a combination of
our heirloom purple pod pole and another old time favorite," rattlesnake" beans
,whose tender pods have a dark green background overlaid with purple
markings. Renee used these beans to make her
green bean pâté for lunch almost
every day last week! Our round zucchini trial is bearing heavily too, with
cultivars from France, Italy, and the United States. We really enjoy them
hollowed out, then stuffed and baked with ground lamb and rice flavored with
mint, garlic and basil. Our second planting of new dwarf sunflower and cosmos
varieties are really strutting their stuff and Renee and trial manager Lindsay
are amazed at the excellent flavor of the container mint from our favorite
Italian suppliers -- the first mint from seed whose quality we've found uniform
enough to consider adding to our line. |
