Congratulations to our first place winner Debra Mase.
From her beautiful garden in Lebanon, Tennessee. Debra
tells us that she has been gardening for many years, starting with her first herb
garden in front of her father's workshop at age 14. She has even gardened in very
high altitudes (9000 feet!). Debra grows a wide range of edibles including pumpkins for homemade pies, lots of salad lettuces, and has a 65 tree apple
orchard. She loves zinnias and says of the handsome green spider who posed so
perfectly on her equally green Renee's Garden
"Green Envy" Zinnia
,
"My garden is good -bug friendly, so I hope to not only have the flowers again
next year, but offspring of that same spider."

In the Trial Garden
|
|
September marked the end of summer trials, so we've just finished tasting and
evaluating new sauce (Roma style) tomatoes from different Italian suppliers, but
didn't find any with better flavor than our current variety Pompeii. We've had a
late summer planting of our
Salad Leaf basil,
Mrs. Burns lemon basil,
Queenette
Thai,and marvelously fragrant
Perfumo Di Genova basils to enjoy with the
tomatoes, so big juicy slices of tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella sandwiches
have been the order of the day for lunch around here.
In the flower gardens, Renee just finished picking out a wonderful new cutting
zinnia in beautiful rose shades as well as a jazzy hot color combo of rich
purple, vibrant yellow and glowing orange from our 120 foot planting of
different zinnia cultivars. We will trial these ready to pick bouquets in
Vermont next summer to make sure they do well there and probably introduce them
for the 2010. |
